The American formula: city + mascot
US soccer teams, like almost all US pro sports, follow the city + mascot formula: LA Galaxy, Seattle Sounders, Portland Thorns.
It's inherited from American baseball and football tradition, and it gives every team a mascot to build a crest around.
The English formula: city + FC or United
English clubs, and most European ones, skip the mascot entirely and use 'FC,' 'United,' 'City,' or 'Athletic' after the city name.
Manchester United.
Liverpool FC.
Everton.
The city IS the mascot.
This convention is older and reads more traditional.
Suffix choice signals identity
In England, the suffix tells you something about the club: 'United' historically signaled a merger of two clubs; 'City' signals the town's team; 'Athletic' or 'Rangers' add character.

Major League Soccer has been quietly shifting from American to European conventions.
